It’s the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

I just received a very gracious call from Sen. McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he’s fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and Gov. Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the vice-president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation’s next first lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the White House. And while she’s no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my campaign manager, David Plouffe; my chief strategist, David Axelrod; and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics — you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you’ve sacrificed to get it done.

I know you didn’t do this just to win an election, and I know you didn’t do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime — two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor’s bills, or save enough for college. A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes, we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves: If our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

Facciamo l’ipotesi, così astrattamente, che ci sia un partito al potere, un partito dominante, il quale però formalmente vuole rispettare la costituzione, non la vuole violare in sostanza. Non vuol fare la marcia su Roma e trasformare l’aula in alloggiamento per i manipoli; ma vuol istituire, senza parere, una larvata dittatura.
Allora, che cosa fare per impadronirsi delle scuole e per trasformare le scuole di stato in scuole di partito? Si accorge che le scuole di stato hanno il difetto di essere imparziali. C’è una certa resistenza; in quelle scuole c’è sempre, perfino sotto il fascismo c’è stata. Allora, il partito dominante segue un’altra strada (è tutta un’ipotesi teorica, intendiamoci). Comincia a trascurare le scuole pubbliche, a screditarle, ad impoverirle. Lascia che si anemizzino e comincia a favorire le scuole private. Non tutte le scuole private. Le scuole del suo partito, di quel partito. Ed allora tutte le cure cominciano ad andare a queste scuole private. Cure di denaro e di privilegi. Si comincia persino a consigliare i ragazzi ad andare a queste scuole, perché in fondo sono migliori si dice di quelle di stato. E magari si danno dei premi, come ora vi dirò, o si propone di dare dei premi a quei cittadini che saranno disposti a mandare i loro figlioli invece che alle scuole pubbliche alle scuole private. A “quelle” scuole private. Gli esami sono più facili, si studia meno e si riesce meglio. Così la scuola privata diventa una scuola privilegiata. Il partito dominante, non potendo trasformare apertamente le scuole di stato in scuole di partito, manda in malora le scuole di stato per dare la prevalenza alle scuole private. Attenzione, amici, in questo convegno questo è il punto che bisogna discutere.
Attenzione, questa è la ricetta. Bisogna tener d’occhio i cuochi di questa bassa cucina. L’operazione si fa in tre modi: ve l’ho già detto: rovinare le scuole di stato. Lasciare che vadano in malora. Impoverire i loro bilanci. Ignorare i loro bisogni. Attenuare la sorveglianza e il controllo sulle scuole private. Non controllarne la serietà. Il precedente storico è tutt’altro che incoraggiante.
Dopo il crollo del 1929, gli Stati Uniti si sono chiusi in se stessi, reintroducendo il protezionismo. Tornò ad avere rapporti con il resto del mondo solo dopo l’attacco del Giappone a Pearl Harbour nel dicembre del 1941. È ancora troppo presto per dirlo con certezza, ma è possibile che l’America sia a un punto di svolta simile nella propria storia. La decisione del Presidente Bush di trasferire il denaro dei contribuenti ad istituzioni finanziarie andate in bancarotta ha condotto ad un’esplosione del debito pubblico degli USA, che peggiorerà enormemente a causa della decisione presa ieri a Washington.

Come conseguenza di ciò, l’affidabilità creditizia degli USA a livello globale è a rischio, ed è probabile che entro il prossimo decennio il dollaro perderà il suo status mai messo in discussione di valuta principale nelle riserve mondiali. Vi sono segni che [dimostrano] che questo processo è già iniziato. Il destino della sterlina è stato segnato da questo tipo di svalutazione in occassione della crisi economica degli anni ’30.

In verità, la decisione successiva di interrompere la corrispondenza tra sterlina e Gold Standard nel 1931 segnò la fine dell’Impero Britannico. Il dominio globale dell’America – già minacciato dall’emergere di potenze economiche rivali come la Cina – potrebbe presto avere fine.
Gli Stati Uniti probabilmente si ritireranno al proprio interno, diventando isolazionisti, almeno temporaneamente – aprendo la strada ad un nuovo e persino più minaccioso ordine globale. È inevitabile che l’America si ritirerà presto dall’Iraq, lasciando che il suo peggior nemico, l’Iran, sia la potenza dominante nella regione senza essere messo in discussione.
La Cina si farà valere maggiormente e vorrà umiliare Washington imponendo il proprio controllo su Taiwan, fatto di fronte al quale la Casa Bianca avrà difficoltà a opporre resistenza. Essa passerà poi a minacciare la vicina India.

L’Africa diventerà la sede di guerre per procura tra la Cina e l’Occidente, come lo fu delle guerre delegate tra gli Stati Uniti e la Russia sovietica per gran parte del periodo post-bellico. La Cina, irritando ulteriormente gli Stati Uniti, inizierà anche ad intromettersi in America Latina. Il mondo che uscirà dal Grande Crollo del 2008, perciò, sarà oscuro e imprevedibile. Questo fine settimana, tutte le famiglie sagge analizzeranno la loro situazione finanziaria, preveniranno gli inevitabili problemi che li aspettano, e faranno immediatamente dei tagli alle spese non necessarie come i pasti fuori casa, le seconde auto e le vacanze all’estero. Negli ultimi 25 anni abbiamo vissuto in una bella festa, tutti noi – governi, aziende, banche e, naturalmente, consumatori – abbiamo vissuto al di sopra dei nostri mezzi e ne stiamo pagando il prezzo.

Questo fine settimana iniziano i postumi della sbornia. Dureranno a lungo.

Lo stile di vita sarà molto più simile all’austerità del secondo dopoguerra piuttosto che al boom delirante e sostenuto dai debiti degli ultimi due decenni. Forse le nostre vite non peggioreranno a causa di tutto questo. I nostri valori sicuramente cambieranno – molti diranno che era ora. Gli oggetti materiali dovrebbero contare molto di meno. Quasi dall’oggi al domani siamo entrati in nuovo mondo, e dobbiamo imparare a trarne il meglio.
